Our Ethical Policy
Being a good employer
Kampala Fair Limited was founded to provide good jobs for Ugandans, particularly for disadvantaged women in Uganda, and from a belief that giving people the chance to work is more powerful than giving charity.
We will provide pleasant and safe working conditions, good salaries, keep reasonable hours and provide additional benefits (eg loans for land purchase) to our staff.
We will provide training through a peer to peer training scheme, to ensure our staff have skills that they can take on future work.
We will be open with staff about the general affairs and direction of the company, and seek their opinions on matters that concern them.
We will not employ people under 16 in our workshop or elsewhere. Whilst our focus is In supporting women, we will not discriminate in hiring, remuneration, or access to training, promotion, termination, or retirement based on sex, race, caste, national origin, religion, disability, gender, sexual orientation, union membership, political affiliation, HIV/Aids status or age.
Adding value to our community
We will source our fabrics and other raw materials from markets within Kampala, contributing towards a living for poor traders within those markets.
We will be open and transparent in our dealings with suppliers, business partners and other stakeholders and we will seek to build long term relationships based on solidarity, trust and mutual respect.
In the marketing of our products and our company, we will reflect the community in which we are based (for example, in the use of our models, who will be both black and white, and who will not be unnaturally thin) and will seek to tell the stories of the women and men who work for us as part of this reflection.
Environmental Standards
We will be transparent about our current inability to trace our fabrics.
We will use no chemicals in our part of the production chain.
We will use the minimum amount of water and will use all fabric remnants possible in our homewares products.
We will ensure the highest standards of workmanship in our products so that we can guarantee the longevity of our products.
Promotion of Fairtrade
As a ‘social business’, we will in our communications with all stakeholders promote the benefits of fair trade.
Having completed membership of UGAFAT, we will consider working towards WFTO accreditation over the next two years.
Being a Good Company
